What will He say to me?

What is “Listening” Prayer?

Jesus said the foremost commandment can be summed up on one word: HEAR or SHEMA (Dt. 6:4), which means to LISTEN with the intent of responding to what you HEAR.

Jesus only did and said what He saw the Father doing and saying. Therefore, to us, “Listening” prayer is our description of training ourselves to pray with this intention, not only individually, but corporately. We could also call it a type of “Kingdom” prayer, because in a nutshell praying, we are decreeing and declaring “on earth what we see and hear from heaven.” Thus, we quiet our hearts and in one heart and one Spirit, we position ourselves to “watching to see what God will say” to us (Hab 2:1). God speaks through numerous means, in words and pictures, in our emotions and heart, and in and through all of our senses. When the body of Messiah comes together, all of our “listening” gifts can be activated to Listen to His Voice. Together our collective ways of “Hearing” God combine to paint a beautiful picture of what GOD is doing and saying to us for that day so that, like Jesus, we can decree and declare what God is doing and saying to us at that time! Therefore, we call it “Listening” Prayer, because our focus is not on us or our needs alone, but (in unity) looking to HEAR and respond to the Lord’s Voice as one heart and one mind according to the Spirit.

The Basics of “Listening” Prayer

So how exactly is this “Listening” Prayer Group different from other prayer groups you may have participated in, in the past? Here are the basics.

Welcome, Opening Prayer

  • As people sign-on to Zoom we catch up with each other and take prayer requests if someone has a need.
  • Someone is assigned to open us in prayer for those prayer requests. Another person is assigned to do the closing prayer, and one additional person is assigned to lead the communion that will be taken at a certain time determined by the leader during the prayer hour.
  • The leadership will generally open with any Scriptures that the Lord gave him or her to start the corporate “Listening” Prayer time.

“Listening” Prayer Hour

  • Each Listener quiets their heart and spirit and begins to meditate on the initial Scripture and wait on the Lord to speak.
  • All the senses could be used to “Hear” the Lord. Internal or external seeing, internal or external hearing, internal or external sensing, internal or external knowing. Or mystically (i.e. someone actually has an encounter that is beyond the natural senses, like an overlay of seeing beyond naturally or in one’s sanctified imagination).
  • For example, someone might see a picture in their mind’s eye of a tree near a stream. They would share what they are seeing. Someone else may get a Scripture verse come to mind, and they would share that. Another person may hear one or more words, and they would share those. Together, you’ll be amazed at how all of the various ways of speaking come together to paint one unified communication relevant to the lives of all involved that ministers to our hearts and really demonstrates the power of our unity and oneness in the Spirit of God.
  • One thing Dr. Chris has found helpful is to draw pictures of what people hear and see the Lord saying. If you’re a visual learner, it is a great way to “see” what we “hear” the Lord speaking.

“Pray, then, in this way. . . thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

Matthew 6:9-10
